The other week my friend turned me on to a new coffee shop in town, or new to me anyhow. Tucked right around the corner from Top Mart in Hwangseong-dong is Chocolat (쇼코라) coffee shop (French pronunciation, of course).
I went there again this last Sunday after hiking Mt. Geungang with some friends (more on that soon) and I had my camera this time. The proprietress, Ji Young, is studying to become a barista, so she knows her way around an espresso machine. She speaks a wee bit of English too. What ever she may lack in her English skills, she makes up with her bubbly and welcoming personality.
Sure, Chocolate has a cozy atmosphere and great cappuccino, but what makes Chocolat awesome is, well… the chocolate. Ji Young makes homemade boutique chocolate and it’s mind blowing. Granted, at 1,500 won a piece it’s not cheap. But it’s great for a little bit of mindless self indulgence, or as the perfect gift for a special some one. If that’s a little out of your price range, no worries. Ji Young serves it on the house with any order of coffee.
Directions: Chocolat is a little tricky to find. Your best bet is to take a cab to the Hwanseong-dong Top Mart. From the big parking lot (yes, there are two) walk away from Top Mart out of the parking lot. Turn left, walk to the next street corner and turn left again. It’s on the right, just across from the raw beef restaurant.
