Ever since “China Cook” changed owners and slid down hill, I’ve had an aching void in my life where great Chinese food should be. As the fates would have it, last month some kind folks at work turned us on to a new Chinese joint in town: Boo Yong (부용) Chinese Restaurant. It’s just across the river in Guemjang-ri (금장리); a little bit out of the way, but well worth the effort. We’ve been there about 4 times last month and we’re slowly working our way through the menu. So far there’s not a thing on it we haven’t liked.
The menu’s in Korean, Chinese and English, so it’s pretty easy to navigate. If you’re with a group of 4 or more, you get the most bang for your buck with one of the set menus (about 15,00 to 20,000 won a person). Most of the set menus start off with a delectable crab soup. The sweet and sour pork, or tangsooyook (탕수육), is spot on, but my favorite so far is the chili shrimp (간쇼새우).
The fried dumplings (만두) are killer, but if you’re itching for something more out of the ordinary, they’ve got some pretty funky seafood dishes on the menu. The cold jelly fish (해파리냉채) was surprisingly delish, not to mention the stir-fried sea cucumber, shrimp and beef (유산슬).
Directions: As I said before, Boo Yong (부용) is a little bit out of the way, but it’s still fairly easy to find. From Hwangseong-dong, cross the Hyeongsanggang river on the Geumjanggyo bridge and continue straight for several blocks. Turn left at the last light before going under the railroad tracks and it’s just down the block on the left.

Ate there a couple days ago and really enjoyed it. The fried shrimp is excellent and lemony as hell, but damn fine eating!
Thanks man, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Any good restaurants over by your place?
