More Dangsan Namu (당산나무): KTV Documentary in 4 Parts

Since we’ve been on the subject of Dangsan Namu (당산나무) lately, I posting a KTV documentary I found on Youtube about Korean Dangsan Namu.  The documentary is in 4 parts, though unfortunately only the first and second seconds have English subs.  Even so, parts 1 and 2 are enough to a give a sense of the rich variety of legends surrounding the Dangsan Namu in Korean folklore.  Part 2 even includes details on the traditional village ceremonies honoring the Dangsan Namu on Daeboreum (대보름), which I talked about a few weeks ago.   Unfortunately my Korean’s not good enough to make much sense of the Korean narration in parts 3 and 4, but I’m including them below anyways.  If any Korean speakers would like to chime in with a summary in the comments section, I’d definitely appreciate it ;-)

I’m new to Gyeongju and wanted to tell you what a great job you’ve done on your blog. It’s a wonderful resource with thoughtful commentary. I’m in Hwangsung-dong about 10 minutes on foot from the park. I’d like to make friends here. Do you know of some activities going on that may help me to meet other foreigners here? I teach at an academy so on weekdays I can only get out after 9 or 10pm. Otherwise, I’m free on weekends and up for pretty much anything. Peace – Patrick

Hey Patrick, Sorry for the late reply. I’ve been a bit swamped with work with the start of the semester and all, so I’m afraid the blogs taken a back seat for a bit. If you’re on Facebook, there’s a English-speaking community forum called the Gyeongju Foreigners Association. Folks organize a lot of sports events and outings there. Also, the local expat watering hole these days is the “Metro” bar, which is just a block south and west from the Dong-dae Sagori intersection in the neighborhood of Seonggeon-dong. I’ve got a family and I’m working on my Masters atm, so I don’t make it out much. Still, the Metro’s a good place to meet folks on the weekends in a more relaxed environment. Good luck and welcome to Gyeongju ;-)
