Gyeongju Videos on the Korean Heritage Channel

The other day I was rummaging around on Youtube for videos to fill out a playlist on Gyeongjublog’s fledgling Youtube Channel and I stumbled across some amazing videos on something called the Korean Heritage Channel.  I know I use far too many superlatives on this blog already, but this channel features some of the [...]

Restaurant Review #17: Hwangnam Maetdol Sundubu Restaurant (황남 맷돌 순두부)

Growing up I never cared much for mushrooms. Like a lot of kids I guess, I found them bland and boring. Then again, this was back in the culinary dark ages of the 80’s when the supermarkets only stocked button mushrooms and nobody had yet uttered the word “foodie.”  In the 90’s my tastes changed [...]

Restaurant Review #15: Dosol Maeul (도솔 마을)

I apologize for being a bit slack with the restaurant reviews here lately.  It’s been long overdue that I post on one of the classic tourist restaurants in Gyeongju: Dosol Maeul (도솔 마을).  And, unlike a lot of over-hyped tourist restaurants around here, Dosol Maeul is well deserving of its reputation.

December Events in Gyeongju

There are a few things going on in Gyeongju this month that I thought I’d mention here.  First, I recently heard that the Buddhist Art Majors at Dongguk University are currently holding an exhibit of their work at the Seorebol Cultural Center (서라벌 문화회관).  The Buddhist Art Program at Dongguk University is pretty unique as [...]

Cherry Blossom (벚꽃) Season in Gyeongju

Since I’ve been on the topic of festivals lately, I thought I’d post on this one BEFORE it happened for a change.  It’s not an official festival really, but with Spring looming on the horizon, we’re just a couple of weeks away from cherry blossom season.  Gyeongju, along with Jinhae further south, is one of [...]

Daeboreum (대보름) Full Moon Bonfire Festival

After living in Spain for two years, I’ve come to love any festival involving fire. Maybe it’s my inner pyromaniac, or the fact that burning things is generally illegal in my country. It seems the Spanish can’t have a festival without fireworks, bonfires, or setting something or other on fire… and the Spanish have a [...]

Sunghyejeon (숭혜전) Confucian Shrine

Walking through the gates here feels a bit like stepping back in time. The calmness of the atmosphere never fails to move me and if you can catch it now when the gingko trees are bright yellow, it’s just magic. It’s a fairly large complex of buildings, so feel free to nose a round a bit. The only part that’s not usually open to the public is the back part which I assume is only open for ceremonial holidays.
